In Memory of Winton S. Filipek
A letter from the Filipek family

Our father, Winton S. Filipek passed away unexpectedly in January 2005.

Dad was noted as an all-around athlete. He played 3rd base for the semi-professional Insilico baseball team in the 1940s. He also showed athletic skill in basketball, softball, bowling, and golf. In 1993, he was honored in Meriden and presented the Sportsman Of Distinction Award, the induction into the Meriden Sports Hall of Fame.

However, it was tennis that held a special place in his heart. Wint was a Meriden city champ at age 16, played an exhibition match with nationally ranked and Meriden’s own Lois Felix, and played tennis for close to 60 years.

Our family was fortunate to partner with the Wallingford Family YMCA in 2005 and have our dad’s name added, as a memorial to him, to the title of their annual tennis tournament. That tournament has now become the premier community tennis tournament in New England, with 414 players participating in 2007.

We decided that all our proceeds from the tournament would be used to fund an annual scholarship, the Winton S. Filipek Sr. Scholarship Fund.

In 2007, we were able to donate $6,750 in scholarships to tennis playing college bound seniors, who excelled academically.

Due to the success of our tournament, and the generosity of friends and family who have contributed to this scholarship fund, we hope to provide even greater assistance in the future to student athletes and to maintain dad’s scholarship in perpetuity.

His five children, all tennis players, ask you to please help us to honor our father in this special way, and consider contributing to his scholarship fund.

Thank you,
Kathy, Patty, David, Wint Jr. and Nancy
